PROJECT OVERVIEW
The NorthShore University HealthSystem organization undertook an ambitious expansion program on their 55-acre Glenbrook Hospital campus.
These improvements included:
• 140,000 square foot, three-story medical office building
• 12,000 square foot Radiology Department expansion
• 14,000 square foot Emergency Room expansion
• Temporary Closure and Reconstruction of the Hospital Heliport.
Gewalt Hamilton Associates (GHA) provided complete site engineering to support the campus improvements, including design of a 900-space surface parking lot, 5.2 acre-feet of additional stormwater detention storage, and site utilities. GHA’s scope included roadway widening improvements on Landwehr Road adjacent to the Hospital. Sequencing of the construction of the Emergency Department was carefully developed to ensure unimpeded access to private and emergency vehicles.
Working with the Hospital owner’s representative, Integrated Facilities Solutions, and the architect, Eckenhoff Saunders Architects, Site planning services included assistance in the preparation of a Master Plan which identified the ultimate development of the entire campus, and testimony regarding the on- and offsite improvements at Village hearings on behalf of the Hospital. Additionally, GHA prepared ALTA and topographic surveys of the entire campus and Plats of Easement and Abrogation for onsite public utilities.
Given that the site is an active hospital, proper sequencing of the construction activities, temporary patient drop off areas, and campus parking are major considerations.
