Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. (GHA) successfully completed comprehensive engineering and construction services for the Cumberland Terrace Park Bike Path in partnership with the Des Plaines Park District in Des Plaines, Illinois.

The initiation of the Cumberland Terrace Park Bike Path project was prompted by concerns for students from Terrace Elementary School who were crossing railway tracks to reach Cumberland Terrace Park. The project included the design and construction of a Hot Mix Asphalt bike path linking Cumberland Terrace Park and Des Plaines Manor Park. A bridge was added over Weller Creek, with the structural engineering undertaken by Civiltech Engineering Inc. as a sub-consultant.

Engineering services provided by GHA covered a wide range of aspects for the project. Preliminary engineering efforts included wetland delineation and a floodway hydraulic analysis to ensure the project’s environmental compatibility.

The scope of work extended to final engineering, where GHA oversaw the detailed planning and design processes, as well as the preparation of all necessary construction documentation. Key components included an Existing Conditions/Demolition Plan based on topographic surveys, a JULIE design request for utility identification, and a multifaceted site plan combining geometric and grading elements.

Additionally, GHA prepared and secured the Illinois Bicycle Path Grant, which provided crucial funding for the project. The careful planning and execution of the project, under GHA’s guidance, ensured compliance with all regulatory standards and client specifications.
