Gewalt Hamilton provided design and construction engineering services for the Village of Riverwoods on this privately funded roadway maintenance program within four private special service areas (SSA) including SSA 19 (Hiawatha Woods), SSA 25 (East Course), SSA 26 (Kenilwood Association), and SSA 27 (Wind Lake Terrace) for a total length of 20,000 feet (3.79 miles) in the Village of Riverwoods, Lake County, Illinois.
This work included, but was not limited to, hot-mix asphalt pavement removal of various depths, hot-mix asphalt pavement patching, storm sewer removal and replacement, preparation of base, new aggregate subbase material, hot-mix asphalt binder course, area reflective crack control, hot-mix asphalt surface course, landscape and shoulder restoration and all incidental and collateral work necessary to complete the project as specified.
This project conveyed many challenges particularly being private SSA association funding. Per SSA law, these roads are private and the residents pay for maintenance through tax funds. This provided increasing challenges with well over 120 residents affected having a say in the means and methods of construction. Furthermore, each private roadway has one way of ingress/egress on very narrow roadways, some of which were just twelve feet wide. At no point in time could any of the roadways be closed therefore the staging and traffic control had to be well timed and planned. Gewalt Hamilton and the contractor worked tirelessly to complete the project in a timely manner and were successful in completing the project on time and under budget.
Providing daily communication relative to delays, and schedules to the local residents, pedestrians, postal carriers, refuse collectors, and stakeholders proved to be a vital component of this project. In addition, Gewalt Hamilton worked extensively to coordinate with the Village of Riverwoods, private SSA presidents and the prime contractor of Curran Contracting Inc to achieve a successful project.
