This biennial conference attracts transportation data users and travel monitoring professionals from around the world to exchange ideas and learn about new technologies, best practices, and innovative processes.

Art's presentation, "Video Data Collection: More Than Just Volume Counts?", discussed a creative use of video collection units in combination with license plate recognition cameras. In addition to vehicle classification, this application of technologies enabled the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) to identify the origin of cash-paying vehicles (those not using the KTAG electronic tolling system), who make up approximately 60% of KTA  travelers.

Vernon Hills Proclaims Gewalt Hamilton 35th Anniversary

(VERNON HILLS, IL) – Vernon Hills Village Board President Roger Bryne presented a Proclamation to Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. for their 35th Anniversary on January 24, 2017. President Bruce Shrake and Vice Presidents David Gewalt and Mike Shrake received the proclamation at a Village Board of Trustees meeting in the Village Hall.

In addition to 35 years in business, the Village highlighted Gewalt Hamilton’s diverse and frequent civil engineering projects in partnership with Vernon Hills such as the Vernon Hills Memorial Arbortheater, Hawthorn School District 73 and the 2008 Street Rehabilitation Program which received the American Public Works Association’s 2009 Project of the Year Award for Transportation. In 2016, Gewalt Hamilton was the Civil Engineer for the Park District’s Sullivan Community Center Expansion, including traffic analysis of the campus to anticipate planning infrastructure on Aspen Drive over the next five years.

Gewalt Hamilton was founded in 1981 by David Gewalt and Robert Hamilton in Gewalt’s Lake Bluff home office. The company has grown to include 40 Professional Engineers, 85 total employees and has been headquartered in Vernon Hills for the past 20 years.

Back when they were starting out, the two Professional Engineers had complementary skills; David Gewalt focused on operations and financials, Bob Hamilton built relationships. Together they sought to deliver service that exceeded client expectations. Office locations evolved and in 1990, Bruce Shrake joined the company as a principal. Over the 35-years Gewalt Hamilton has expanded services to include land surveying, transportation, construction engineering, transportation planning, traffic data collection and environmental consulting.

Bruce Shrake became president in 2008. Robert Hamilton retired in 2014, about the same time the firm moved into their new headquarters in Vernon Hills, Illinois.

“I hereby urge the citizens of our community to recognize the contributions and commitment of Gewalt Hamilton Associates to the Vernon Hills community,” announced Roger Bryne at the meeting.

“The Village of Vernon Hills has partnered with Gewalt Hamilton for many years,” explained Bruce Shrake.

“We work with all of our clients, not for them, bringing a team approach to every assignment,” reports Dave Gewalt. “Our clients trust us to listen to their needs and provide honest feedback, as well as deliver exceptional results.”

Many employees and their families live and play in the same communities in which their work is performed. Staff has a vested interest in every project. From the roadways traveled to the schools attended by their children and the shopping centers frequented, Gewalt Hamilton has helped shape the environment in Chicago, its suburbs and beyond.
