Gewalt Hamilton has gone from a two person home office to a thriving, well-respected corporation.

Gewalt Hamilton was founded in 1981, specializing in civil engineering. In a small home office in Lake Bluff, Illinois, the firm began with two engineers, Dave Gewalt and Bob Hamilton, driven to deliver service that exceeded clients’ expectations. Through decades of diversification and growth, we have added quality professionals in complementary service lines to our firm, resulting in added depth and strength.

Today, Gewalt Hamilton is a multi-disciplinary organization providing comprehensive services in the fields of Civil Engineering, Land Surveying, Construction Engineering, Traffic Engineering and Transportation Planning, Traffic Data Collection, and Environmental Consulting.


  • Gewalt Hamilton is founded by Bob Hamilton and Dave Gewalt. The two work out of a small office in Dave’s Lake Bluff home.


  • Gewalt Hamilton opens office in Northbrook.


  • Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. is incorporated, with President Bob Hamilton and Vice President Dave Gewalt.


  • Bruce Shrake becomes the third Principal and assumes the position of Vice President. Dave Gewalt becomes the Treasurer.


  • Gewalt Hamilton develops groundbreaking traffic data collection procedures for the Illinois Department of Transportation

  • Gewalt Hamilton’s office relocates from Northbrook to Vernon Hills.


  • Gewalt Hamilton makes extensive technological investments in field equipment, computer hardware and software systems.


  • A satellite office opens in Gurnee, Illinois to service northern Lake County clients.


  • Bruce Shrake assumes the role of President, while Bob Hamilton transitions to CEO/Chairman of the Board.

  • Mike Shrake assumes the role of Vice President.


  • A satellite office opens in Chicago to provide transportation planning and engineering services to urban clients.


  • Steve Berecz assumes role of Corporate Secretary.


  • Mike Shrake becomes the fourth Principal of GHA.

  • Chicago office relocates to the Monadnock Building.


  • Service Divisions and Directors are established.

    A satellite office opens in Columbia, Missouri to provide Traffic Data Collection services to the southern Midwest.

  • An existing facility is purchased and extensively renovated to serve as Gewalt Hamilton’s new headquarters in Vernon Hills.

  • Bob Hamilton retires after 33 years at Gewalt Hamilton.
