Project related traffic impacts can be a major source of contention and additional costs for any project. A clear understanding of existing traffic conditions, accurate future projections and familiarity with required improvements are vital elements to land development.

Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. has extensive resources and experience in transportation engineering, traffic planning, traffic signal design and signal systems optimization for both public and private sectors. Whether conducting traffic studies, designing intersection improvements, coordinating and optimizing traffic signal operations, or reviewing these elements on behalf of public agencies, we have the expertise to provide a complete range of transportation engineering services. The foundation for any traffic study is a clear understanding of existing conditions.

GHA has the largest inventory of passive magnetic sensor traffic counters in the United States and a full staff of traffic data collection personnel to conduct traffic counts for state, county, local and private development projects.

Traffic Counting and Data Collection - Illinois Department of Transportation

GHA IDOT COUNT TRUCK

Traffic Counting and Data Collection
Illinois Department of Transportation

GHA has been collecting data on traffic since the company’s formation in 1981. Accurate data gathering on traffic movements is vital in determining the existing transportation needs and impacts of any change in land use. GHA provides manual and machine counts, plus license plate surveys, pedestrian and bicycle volumes, parking space utilization, neighborhood cut thru traffic data and driving time information.

In 2005, 2007 and 2009 GHA was selected by IDOT to collect 24-hour Passive Magnetic Sensor (PMS) counts. Each was a two-year contract that covered northern and central Illinois. Our crews worked from the Mississippi River to the Indiana state line, and from the Wisconsin state line to the area surrounding Peoria. Since 2005, we have completed over 35,000, 24-hour volume and vehicle length counts.

Using the most advanced equipment GHA has developed ways to safely place the counters in a manner that protects our staff and the motoring public. During the 2009 project, GHA collected speed data on a daily basis for up to 150 locations simultaneously, including Interstate Highways, State Routes, County, Township and Municipal Roadways.

IL 116 Signal Coordination and Timing
East Peoria, Illinois

Under contract with the Illinois Department of Transportation, GHA optimized a six signal interconnected traffic signal system on IL 116, between Blackjack Boulevard and Access Drive 8, in East Peoria, Illinois.

GHA field verified existing traffic signal plans, conducted manual turning movement counts and automatic 7-day counts, developed a SYNCHRO 7 network, and analyzed the system for appropriate cycle lengths. After review by IDOT District 4 staff, the timings were implemented and fine tuned. The results included better progression of traffic, lowered emissions, time savings for motorists, as well as a decrease in fuel consumption system wide.

Sherman Hospital Improvements
Randall Road and Fox Lane

Elgin, Illinois

In addition to providing full on-site engineering for the new Sherman Hospital campus, GHA provided professional surveying and engineering services for the off-site roadway improvements.

GHA designed a combined total of approximately 1 mile of road widening on Randall Road and Fox Lane, including the addition of one through lane in each direction, as well as dual left turns into and out of the Hospital site. GHA provided plans for the modernization of two traffic signals and installation of one new traffic signal. A location drainage study was developed as well as storm sewer sizing for the widening project. Surveying services included full right-of-way surveying and preparation of plats for land acquisition and plats of highway/easement for roadway dedication.

GHA also provided Resident Engineering services; construction staking; all roadway construction observation and documentation; pay requests review and recommendation; NPDES construction observation; and coordination with Nicor, AT&T and ComEd for relocation of existing underground utilities that were in conflict with the proposed improvements.

Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc.
Deerfield, Illinois

Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc planned to build a North America Headquarters Campus in unincorporated Lake County on an approximate 70 acre site at the northeast corner of the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Saunders Road. The property was then to be annexed into the Village of Deerfield.

GHA provided traffic projections and impact studies on the adjacent roadway system, as well as Synchro modeling to determine impacts to the adjacent I 294/Lake Cook Road interchange. GHA design services included off-site roadway improvements and traffic signal modernization, along with ramp queue detector plans for the southbound I-294 exit ramp at Lake Cook Road. Additionally, GHA provided coordination with Lake County Division of Transportation, Cook County Highway Department, and the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority to obtain the necessary permits for this development. GHA also served as Resident Engineer and performed all layout, construction observation, and documentation.

Fiber Optic Communications Network on Washington Street
(Section 04-00272-00-TL)

Waukegan, Illinois

For this project utilizing CMAQ funds, GHA provided traffic engineering services for the modernization of traffic signal equipment at 12 intersections along Washington Street.

GHA services included field surveying, topographic surveying, traffic counts, Project Development Report for Group II Categorical Exclusions and Design Approval, preliminary and final engineering plans, and bidding documents through IDOT’s letting procedures. GHA designed the fiber optic communication system for the entire stretch of signals, and coordinated with PACE North Division to include transit signal priority preemption for the interconnect system.
