Gewalt Hamilton provided design and construction engineering services for the Village of Mount Prospect on this $3.4 million federally funded roadway reconstruction, widening, and resurfacing project.

Roadway improvements made to the 0.5 mile section of Kensington Road, between Forest Avenue and Rand Road, included pavement reconstruction, widening the existing 2-lane roadway west of Elmhurst Avenue to a 3-lane cross section, adding an east-bound right turn lane to the 4-lane section at IL Rte 83, and adding a west-bound right turn lane at the intersection of Kensington Road and Rand Road.

The project was funded using Federal STP funding, thus requiring a full Phase I engineering study which included planning and preliminary design as well as Data Collection, Topographic Survey and Base Plan Preparation, Pavement and Soil Investigation, Traffic and Crash Analyses, Environmental Studies, Location Drainage Study, Preliminary Design Plans and Project Development Report.

Gewalt Hamilton was also selected to provide complete Phase II design and Phase III construction engineering services for the reconstruction of Kensington Road. This project involved pavement realignment, roadway widening, and roadway reconstruction of Kensington Road consisting of new curb and gutters and full-depth hot-mix asphalt pavement. The project also included substantial storm sewer installation varying in size from 12” to 60”, related earthwork, as well as a considerable amount of unsuitable and contaminated soils were removed from this project. Traffic signal improvements and modernization of the complex intersection of Kensington Road at Illinois Route 83 and Rand Road., and street lighting along Kensington Road also were major components of the improvements.

Providing communication relative to road closures, delays, and schedules to the local residents, commuters, pedestrians, postal carriers, refuse collectors, business owners, and stakeholders proved to be a vital component of this project. In addition, Gewalt Hamilton worked extensively to coordinate with the Village of Mount Prospect, the Village of Arlington Heights, Prospect High School, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, the Northwest Water Commission, and the joint venture of Martam Construction, Inc./Arrow Road Construction and their subcontractors to achieve a successful project.
