The Garlands of Barrington is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) near the heart of downtown Barrington, Illinois.
The community, developed by Barrington Venture LLC., offers a variety of senior housing options and a mixture of levels of care; from independent living, to assisted living, to complete nursing care on a 32 acre site.
Set within a park-like setting, the Garlands of Barrington is conceived of as a campus of buildings, gardens, quadrangles, courtyards and open spaces designed as an intergenerational neighborhood.GHA worked closely with the design team, assisting in a lengthy public hearing process and designing the intricate site improvements, interweaving hardscape improvements with lakes and wandering gardens.
The stormwater management system features three lakes and an underground detention vault having a volume in excess of 3 acre-feet located below one of the quadrangles. A key component of the multi-disciplined project was coordination between the design team, the Village of Barrington, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), and the neighboring residents.
Review of the development by the Village’s Plan Commission and Board was intensive and lengthy. GHA and the Design Team worked closely with the Village Staff and neighboring residents to satisfy their concerns. In addition, the site plan was meticulously designed to save numerous mature trees throughout the site.
